Dinner Re-cap
More than 100 people attended the Easton
Republican Town Committee’s campaign kickoff dinner on Saturday,
September 26, at “707 on Main” in Monroe. Among the dignitaries
present were State Representative John Stripp, Judge of Probate
John Chiota, Superintendant of Schools Dr. Alan Fossbender,
and former U.S. Congressman Rob Simmons who is the leading
Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 2010.
During his brief remarks, Simmons congratulated the Easton
Republican Party for its successful and prudent management
of the town for many years and cited the town’s recent AAA
bond rating from Standard & Poor’s at a time when most towns
are experiencing fiscal difficulties.

Easton Republican Town Committee Chairman,
Hugh Barry, heralded the accomplishments of the Republican
candidates for election in November by saying “First Selectman
Tom Herrmann and Selectman, Scott Centrella, have been ‘proven
leaders’ for Easton, accomplishing much in their first term
together but they need to be re-elected to confront the economic
and social challenges which lie ahead”.

After dinner, Judy Shapiro Greenberg, PhD
and Mitch Greenberg, DVM, were honored as the recipients of
the Distinguished Republican Award for 2009. First Selectman
Tom Herrmann presented a declaration stating that September
26, 2009 is Judy and Mitch Greenberg Day in Easton and State
Representative Stripp presented the Greenberg’s with a citation
from the State of Connection General Assembly. Dr. Fossbender
delivered an eloquent tribute to Judy Shapiro for her years
of dedicated service to the Region 9 Board of Education, and
particularly for her outstanding leadership as Chair during
challenging times. His praise was echoed by Cathy Gombos,
a member of the Region 9 Board who served with Judy. First
Selectman Herrmann paid tribute to Dr. Greenberg for his many
years of service to Easton and the Exchange Club, and for
the excellent and sensitive care he has provided to hundreds
of animals in his veterinary practice over 30 years.

The evening concluded with a spirited auction
championed by co-auctioneers John Stripp and Tom Herrmann.
