August 15, 2009

Dear Fellow Republican:

No doubt you have heard the good news that First Selectman Tom Herrmann and Selectman Scott Centrella, along with our entire slate of candidates, were unanimously endorsed by your party caucus on July 21, 2009 to run for another term this November. Tom and Scott, with the bi-partisan cooperation of many town boards and commissions, have accomplished much for Easton in their first 2-year term together - but there is more to be done.

Tom has delivered for Easton!

He, and the Republican team, fulfilled their campaign promises of using Energy & Vision to Explore Better Ways by maintaining and defending our protective zoning regulations, operating your town government more efficiently, supporting our senior citizens with enhanced property tax relief options and encouraging the highest standards of academic excellence in public education for our children.

To be more specific, Tom has:

(1) successfully negotiated a resolution to the long-standing South Park Avenue development crisis;

(2) presided over the lowest two-year tax increase of 1.65% since 1994;

(3) achieved, along with the Town Treasurer and the Chair of the Board of Finance, the highest AAA credit rating from Standard & Poor's; and

(4) compassionately supported a proposed tax relief ordinance offering more flexible options for our valued senior citizens.

All this and much more was accomplished during the last 20 months and, importantly, in a cordial, harmonious and bi-partisan fashion with the Democratic Selectman voting with Tom and Scott on all but one occasion.

In short, Tom has been doing all the right things for Easton by listening attentively to his constituents regardless of their political party affiliation and taking bold and decisive action.

The local Democratic Party, likely emboldened by the recent Obama landslide will challenge our slate of candidates. In spite of all our many accomplishments, Republicans must not be complacent - we lost US Representative Christopher Shays last November and the Hartford State House has long been controlled by Democrats. In fact, in their desperate attempt to find a campaign issue, they have already made unfounded accusations demeaning the quality of our highly acclaimed educational system and the Republican party's unwavering commitment to it. We simply cannot and will not lose Easton to the Democratic fold.

Your support is essential at the polls on Tuesday, November 3rd, but we also need your financial contribution right now to wage an aggressive, positive and effective campaign which clearly delivers our compelling message of our many social and economic achievements.

I realize economic conditions are tough for many but we desperately need to keep Tom Herrmann and your Republican team in office here in Easton. Any personal assistance with the campaign effort would also be greatly appreciated.

On behalf of Tom, Scott and your entire Republican team, I thank you sincerely for your generous financial support and look forward to seeing you at our annual Dinner/Auction on Saturday, September 26th at "707 on Main" in Monroe honoring Judy Shapiro Greenberg, PhD, and Mitch Greenberg, DVM, for their many years of devoted and unselfish service to our party and to our community.

With the greatest pride and confidence in our party, I remain,
Hugh J. Barry
