Chairman ERTC

As reported previously, it was a “clean sweep” on November 8th for our entire team of Republican candidates for the fourth municipal election cycle in a row. Obviously, the electorate has recognized the excellent job our Republican team has been doing in these tough times to (1) dramatically reduce the rate of property tax increases, (2) reduce the Town’s debt service and lower the overall debt, (3) provide more tax relief for our qualifying seniors, (4) continue to support academic excellence in our acclaimed schools, and (5) defend against high-density housing applications inconsistent with our zoning regulations.

Although it was a resounding victory, it was disappointing that only 35% of registered voters came to the polls – down from 41% two years ago and 51% in 2007. This low voter turnout occurred, unfortunately, in neighboring towns as well. The fact that the Easton Democratic Party did not endorse a candidate for First Selectman, as well as numerous other offices, also contributed to keeping the numbers down in spite of the unseasonably warm and beautiful sunny weather on Election Day.

First Selectman Tom Herrmann received 75% of the actual votes cast for this office. Although there were 260 abstentions, this compares with 402 abstentions the last time we had an uncontested race for First Selectman in Easton. Voter turnout that year also was a low 34.4%, - virtually identical to this year, – so similar voting patterns occurred given the same uncontested nature of the election.

With the local town elections successfully behind us, it is time to focus on key federal and state races in 2012. The Republican Party in Connecticut stands a great chance of electing a U.S. Senator for the first time in over 20 years. We hope to regain the 4th Congressional District seat in Fairfield County lost in 2008 when President Obama swept so many Democrats into congress on his coat tails. Voter dissatisfaction with President Obama and his failed policies, combined with a traditional Republican-leaning electorate, make the 4th COD a key battleground for us.

For the US Senate, Linda McMahon of Greenwich, Christopher Shays of Bridgeport and Peter Lumaj of Fairfield already have announced their candidacies while Chris Meek of Stamford, Steve Obsitnik of Westport and David Orner of Darien are seeking the Republican nomination for the 4th US Congressional seat at the May 2012 convention. In short, it should be an exciting political year and one where we hope Republicans around the country, and here in Connecticut, will be rejoicing next November 6th. We also have a new Chair of the Republican Party in Connecticut – Jerry Labriola – who will bring new ideas and energy to the state party.

Thank you for your recent, strong support at the polls and for your generous donations which enable us to convey our positive message and underwrite important programs throughout the year. We always are looking for new talent to serve on either The Republican Town Committee or on one of the Town Boards or Commissions. If interested, please respond to this e-mail address.

I hope you and your family have a nice Thanksgiving.

Very truly yours,
Hugh J. Barry, Chairman
Easton Republican Town Committee
